Yellow

We had a boot camp workout class this morning at 24 Hour Fitness with Julie. She is the best instructor there, but she normally works on weekdays so we seldom take her class. This morning we did the S.E.T class and we weren't able to fulfill all the movement to the full extent at last. We were both sweating like dogs, but it felt great! I bet I could be skinny and in good shape if I could take her class for an hour per day.

We went to Home Depot and bought tapes, drop cloths and 2 gallons of yellow paint. The color has a beautiful name called Main Street Lights. Biajee will accomplish the task of painting the 3rd room in the house while I'm in Greece. These will certainly keep him occupied.

I haven't started packing yet, but I should definitely do something tonight because my boss has put a conference call on my calendar tomorrow evening between 5 and 6 pm.

Innovation Studio

I had scheduled our whole family to go to Wal-mart and take family photos yesterday. It's an annual thing that we do and I'm suddenly in the mood for it a few weeks ago. To make this more fun for myself, I scheduled myself to go to the mall for makeup before the photography, which I had never done before for the family photos in the previous years.

After walking out of Nordstrom with a full makeup on my face, I checked my voice mail and found that Wal-mart just left me a message telling me that they had a camera down time that day and that I had to reschedule our appointment. If I mention this when I reschedule my appointment, I could get a free poster ($5.99 value).

Biajee and Arnold had already dressed up for the photo. It is really not easy to organize an event for a whole family and then reschedule it. We decided to try Target. By the time we walked in, they told us that they were fully booked that day. The lady was very nice though. She told us that we could try Innovation Studios in the same plaza.

"I'm nervous about anything that's innovative." Biajee commented of the name of the place while we walked across the parking lot.

"Let's just go in and see whether they have opennings." I replied. "If they do not, we won't be able to take the shots today. We'll have to reschedule."

We were told that the wait time is 15 to 20 minutes and the whole process may take a full hour because they give us the photo on the same day right after we choose them.

The results turned out quite good, although Arnold refused to smile in the beginning. He was a lot happier after we started to play soccer ball with him during the 2nd half of the picture taken.

We ended up picking 6 sets of photos printed in different sizes. Biajee and I were both glad that we went to Innovation Studio. The place is reasonably priced and they'll give you a CD of all the pictures taken for you that day. That itself worths a lot because none of the photo studios we've been to in the US would do that for free. Glamourous Shots would charge $100 for the CD, while Wal-mart simply doesn't give you any electronic file at all.

Adobe Acrobat

My new order of the Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional Software just arrived today. This should be a lifesave to my daily work. I had been working on other people's software licenses with 30 day trial versions. It is just painful. Every time I open a PDF file, this annoying window pops up and asks me whether I want to purchase the license.

We have learned today from phdcomics that a software bug can cause the credit rating calculation to be wrong. The stock of Moody's Investors just tanked because of this. How is this possible that nobody had figured out that the credit rating had been wrong all year long?

We've scanned the Taiwan magazine that talked about Berkshire Hathaway's shareholders' meeting into electronic format. Below is the link to the file. Our family picture is on page 59, although they spelled Biajee's Chinese name incorrectly.

Warren's House

The above picture is the house belonging to the richest man in the world. Warren bought it 50 years ago with $31,000. It's 6,000 square foot with 5 bedrooms. He thought he was a king at that time and he had never moved since. The house was made up totally from Acme Brick so that it required little maintenance. Warren can save all that money and put them into investment. Today the house worths about $750,000.

We met a reporter, Mr. Wang Zhijie, from Taiwan's Jin Zhou Kan 今周刊 magazine. He wrote a very nice, deep-dive article about the 2008 shareholders' meeting and Warren's investment strategy. He was so kind to include our family picture in the article as well. We received the magazine last night and read most of it. We found it very educational and instructive. It's certainly a great magazine that can benefit the readers a lot.

As I'm writing this article, Berkshire has released their Q1 2008 earnings. Their net profit went down 64% compared to the same period last year, due to the recession and loss in the derivative market. We still think Berkshire worths a lot more than what was reported as earnings. According to GAAP, they can only report earnings on companies that they own equal to or more than 20% of the holding so there are a lot of earnings not appearing on their 10K and 10Q.

2008 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders' Meeting (Day 4, May 5th) - Driving Back Home

We had breakfast in the TA Travel Center next to our Motel in the morning. Motel 6 was where we stayed at this year. Arnold broke a plate while we were eating. Biajee and I felt so guilty that we fled the restaurant swiftly.

By the time we finished filling up gas and started the drive back home, it was past 10 am. The weather was great coming back home.

We stopped by Cabela's in Kearney. It's a chain store for outdoor activities and hunting. Then we went to Red Lobster's for lunch. It's almost our tradition to dine at the Red Lobster's in Kearney every year. Midwest people do not like seafood that much, therefore the Red Lobster's was always more than half empty.

We also ordered 2 chocolate dipped icecream cones from Diary Queen. I drove for about 2 hours in the afternoon because Biajee was sleepy. Arnold and him slept soundly till we got to Julesburg, the little town on the state border. We changed Arnold there and filled up some gas and hit directly to the Korean restaurant on 76th Avenue in Westminster.

2008 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders' Meeting (Day 3, May 4th) - Henry Doorly Zoo

2008 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders' Meeting (Day 2, May 3rd)

The meeting always starts with a cartoon movie. This year it was about election campaign for president of Charlie Munger. Charlie's solution to health problem was to drink coke and eat See's candies every day. He would even give voters two dimes for a quarter.

The questions and answer session started from 9am and ended at 3 pm, with 30 minutes lunch break in between. Below are some notes from us that are legible.

Q: I own a small business myself. How can I grow it successfully?

W: It takes time. Never try to do a massive stroke. Charlie and I keep doing things we understand and keep doing the same thing over the years. There is an automatic formula for getting ahead, but not an automatic formula for galloping ahead.

C: Most small businesses never became big businesses. Most big businesses became mediocre eventually.

Q: If you couldn't talk to the management of the company, couldn't see the stock market and all you could do is to look at the company financials, what attributes of conclusions can you make to judge a business?
W: Take an example of the farm. Look at the assets yourself. Do you understand the asset? I've done the same thing by only looking at financials. There is no way you could judge and know the nature of the business by pure financials.

C: One metric that we use is that we tend to prefer the business that draws cash. Take an example of a business that rents construction equipment, we hate busines like that. All you get at the end of the year is the equipment in your yard.

Q: What do you think about the Klamoth River? The pollution to it killed fish in the river.

W: There are competing ideas and desires in how to generate electricity. There are societal problems that the state government would have to find out. We have to figure out what is the best way to generate electricity. I'll let Dave speak to the technical issues.

Dave: We're not polluting the river. We're not adding anything to the river.

C: I think burning carbon do worse in polluting the environment than generating electricity.

Q: I'm 12 years old and in my 7th grade. What kind of things should I read?

W: Get a habit of reading a daily newspaper. Try to know as much about the world around you. The more you learn, the more you want to learn.

Q: See's Candies has sent $1.3 billion cash profit to Omaha over the years. They have incurred 20% profit growth on the sales they generated. The chocolate industry in Germany that you're eyeing on doesn't generate a high growth and profit. Would you prefer high profitability and high growth or low profitability and low growth when you invest? Is there a particular reason that you're looking at family businesses in Germany now?

W: If a private business is doing great, there is no reason for people to sell a $1 million business. We never urge people to sell their business. We are the logica buyer. We want to be on the radar screen when people want to sell for different reasons. It's our job to look at hundreds of things. We never buy businesses at bargain prices. The stock market gives you bargain prices while the individual owners don't.

C: I know a California guy who ran a great business. He sold the business to a known crook for a bit higher price. That's bad thing to do for your business.

Q: How do you hedge the dollar as dollar is depreciating?

W: We do not hedge the dollar. We're happy to invest in businesses that make money. The US is going to continue to weaken the dollar in the coming years. If I land from Mars today with a billion Mars Dollars, I would think of what to do with that. But we own 200 million shares of Coke. If it's making $3/share per year, we're making $600 million earnings per year.

Q: What should I do with small amounts of money? How does your investments strategy comply with the non-stock environment in 50s and 60s?

W: There are thousands of possibilities. There are mis-priced bonds and stocks in US and elsewhere, but it won't be currencies. Charlie?

C: Sure.

Q: What would you do differently if you were a presidential candidate?

W: (Chuckles) I'd ask for a recount like Bill Buckley did 40 years ago. We have 3 good candidates this year. I think no matter who takes this position, they'll do a great job. When you're going through the campaigns, you are indulged in this environment to try to make other candidates look bad. We have a country that works awefully well. I think for these 3 candidates, their motivations are better than proclamations. Charlie?

C: After Enron shocked the nation, politicians rolled out Sarbane-Oxley. They're shooting an elephant with a pea shooter.

W: It's a corruptive process. It's situational policy-making. I don't think I would behave any better than the 3 candidates if I were in their shoes. I am a human being as well. You should not expect more of a human being.

There were a lot more other questions and answers, but both Biajee and I feel that the questions this year were not as good as the questions last year. Most people do not understand business at all. Nobody raised the question of General Re, whose executives got convicted crimes of faulse accounting with AIG.

Biajee and I bought a lot of books and DVDs this year. We spent a lot of money in Omaha. We need to buy more stock of BRK to fund our trips next year.

(2008 Berkeshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting Day 1) May 2nd, 2008

Snow

We got heavy snow this morning. It's May 1st, but this is Colorado weather. Today is Ron's birthday. He is my previous supervisor. I took him to lunch at Wahoo's Fish Taco. He's been with this company for 5 years and tomorrow will be his last day.

I'll be here for 5 years in September. How time flies! I really like Colorado because it didn't seem to me I've moved here for 5 years already. I remember I was so eager to leave Florida at any minute when I was down there, probably because I wasn't extremely happy then. I lived there for 6 years.

Ron is the best boss I've had in my professional career, yet he is laid off by this company. His exit interview is 2 pm tomorrow afternoon. It's sad to see him leave because I have a lot of respect for him. I hope our paths will cross again in future.

We're going to pack for Omaha tonight. Biajee finally recovered from that virus he got. Looks like he'll be able to drive. It's 7 hours and 37 minutes from our house to the hotel by car. We're actually staying in a hotel in Iowa.
